Geranium macrorrhizum

I have to admit to quite a ‘soft spot’ for this and other geraniums, as they bring back memories of my parents’ cottage garden where there were always large areas of geraniums planted in their borders, where they faithfully flowered each year.

Originating from the south east Alps and the Balkans, this fully hardy greranium has adapted well to suit most gardens. Tolerating even dry shade, G. macrorrhizum can be planted in most soil types and locations in your garden.

The pale green foliage, aromatic when crushed, puts on a great display for much of the year. The leaves are lobed and toothed and can be sticky to touch. In autumn months, they may well reward you with changing ,attractive, autumnal colours.

From late spring to late summer, clusters of pink flowers, up to 3cm wide, form in loose clusters on upright stems. Once flowers are going over, remove the flower stems and any old leaves and this will encourage fresh leaves and flowers.

As this geranium will spread quite quickly, it serves many purposes in the garden. It’s location in your garden does not just have to be in a ‘showy’ border but you can treat yourself and use it also in areas where you may want to hide foliage from spring bulbs or areas where there is a real need to supress weeds.
