Persicaria microcephala 'Red Dragon'
Persicaria ‘Red Dragon’ is a very useful and dramatic addition to your garden. It is revered for its burgundy/maroon foliage. Within each leaf there are markings which look like the shape of a smaller leaf surrounded by silvery edges, which has a ‘watermark’ affect. Throughout the season the leaf colour can change to more of a brown and can appear quite green when in low light.
The lance-like shape of the leaf could well resemble the sharp tongue of a dragon!
Almost surplus to requirement, the tiny white flowers during late summer and autumn bring a beautiful contrast to the dark leaves.
Excellent for inhibiting weed growth in bare soil, spread is contained to approximately 100 cm over 2-5 years so there is no need for concern.that this is a troublesome spreader. The plant can be left to grow to its full height or to produce stronger coloured leaves, it is possible to trim down to the base several times throughout the year or just cut back in autumn.
Either on its own in a container or planted amongst contrasting colours this beauty should not be overlooked and certainly won’t be when established in your garden.
