S.telephium Matrona is an invaluable Stonecrop for interest through summer, autumn and even into winter. It is a high impact perennial, proudly boasting its form and texture in a colour that you will find hard to resist. It has been deservedly awarded the A.G.M.
The sturdy foliage is wonderfully coloured, grey-green foliage with purple veins and tinged with purple. Tall purple stems show off clusters of soft pink flowers which age to mauve-pink. The flowerheads are flattened and sit like a cloud above the attractive foliage. Butterflies will be in abundance, dancing around the sultry plant. After summer and flowers have faded, the dried seed heads become a chocolate brown colour and provide excellent winter interest.
Sedums are very easy to grow and low-maintenance, provide full sun and moderate, moist soil for ideal conditions, but it will be tolerant of all bar the wettest soils.
Handy tip: Do not over feed and around October cut back the foliage by half, this will keep the plant compact and tidy and also avoid the stems collapsing later in the year.
